How I Film With Super 8
Weddings are full of small moments that mean a lot, and I’m there to notice them – gestures, details, the light, and the surroundings that give the day its character. I’m simply looking around for you. I don’t direct the day; I film as the celebration unfolds. It’s a camera that raises a smile – people feel a little excited knowing some of the film is being used just for them. Collected together, these moments make a wonderful, emotive record of your day.
My Super 8 Camera
I film weddings on a Braun Nizo 561 Super 8 camera and like to use Kodak film – a film-based, analogue motion picture format that has been around for decades. Of course, there’s no screen on the back and no digital safety net. You pull the trigger, the camera whirs, and the moment is recorded. It has a powerful zoom lens, but I rarely zoom during a scene – I prefer the interest to come from the scene itself, rather than adding unnecessary movement of my own. Each reel of Super 8 film gives us up to three minutes of footage, so I am thoughtful about what I film, while still keeping things a little carefree.
FAQ – Super 8 Wedding Films
How will we receive our Super 8 wedding film?
Once the film is developed and professionally scanned, I edit everything digitally. You’ll receive a high-quality version online that you can watch and share with friends and family.
What can we expect if we book Super 8 only?
The full day is filmed on Super 8 with the aim of creating a creative highlight film – usually around 5–6 minutes, depending on the number of rolls we shoot.
Does Super 8 work indoors or in cloudy weather?
Cloudy days and well-lit indoor spaces look great on Super 8. Very dark settings can be more challenging, but I’m used to working in a range of conditions.
How long does delivery take?
Processing and scanning the film can take a couple of weeks, and most highlight films are delivered within 10 weeks of the wedding day.
Do you travel for weddings?
I’m based in the UK and happy to travel anywhere in the country or abroad for weddings.
Is Super 8 right for us?
If you genuinely love the film aesthetic and are drawn to the romanticism of shooting on real film, then Super 8 may be perfect for you. It isn’t suited to filming full ceremonies or speeches in detail – but if you want lots of beautiful, intricate moments captured with soul, and brought together into a film that reflects the character and atmosphere of your day, nothing else is quite like it.
Do you record sound on Super 8?
Super 8 cameras don’t record sound in-camera, so the finished film is music-led and focused on the look and atmosphere of the day.
Can we choose the music?
Yes – I subscribe to a library of licensed copyright-free tracks, from gorgeous instrumental pieces to atmospheric songs, and I’m happy to help you find something that suits your day and the Super 8 aesthetic.
Can we add Super 8 to our photo or digital video package?
Absolutely. Super 8 works beautifully alongside photography or a full digital wedding film if you’d like both.
